{"id":36,"date":"2011-08-30T05:48:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-30T00:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asgaur.com\/wp\/?p=36"},"modified":"2011-08-30T05:48:00","modified_gmt":"2011-08-30T00:18:00","slug":"lun-metavolume-creation-and-mapping-dmx-symmetrix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.asgaur.com\/wp\/lun-metavolume-creation-and-mapping-dmx-symmetrix\/","title":{"rendered":"LUN \/ METAVOLUME CREATION AND MAPPING DMX \/ SYMMETRIX"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Physical discs are not visible to hosts.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Adsense block #136 not displayed since it exceed the limit of 3 --><!-- Adsense block #137 not displayed since it exceed the limit of 3 --><!-- Adsense block #138 not displayed since it exceed the limit of 3 --><\/li>\n<p>\n<\/ul>\n<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Logical volumes can be created from physical discs and they are called &#8220;hyper volume extension&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>256 hypers can be created on a physical disc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Every hyper has its own personality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Initially any hyper is known as a standard device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimum size of a hyper can be 8mb and maximum size is 32 GB (varies according to the micro code).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Standard device can be unprotected, two ways mirrored, three ways mirrored, 4 way mirrored as well as raid 5 protected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unprotected Standard device less than 5 cylinders are visible to the host which can be configured as gate keeper device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Standard device is visible to host when it is mapped to front end director.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once the LUN is deleted it should be unmapped.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Standard device can be configured to different personalities which may not be visible to host unless it is protected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To set the personalities change the attributes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To convert standard device to BCV device it should be an unprotected device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once standard device is configured to BCV, the BCV can become two ways mirrored.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An unprotected standard device with less than 5 cylinders can be configured as gate keeper device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If gate keeper device is not configured, any volume can become gate keeper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Without gatekeeper EMC control center and solution enabler cannot be operated by host on SYMM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SYMM cannot be managed through TCP\/IP stack as it is a fiber channel device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It requires FC adapter and HBA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Solution enabler installed in the host sends API calls through the HBA across fiber channel to gate keeper device upon receiving the API&#8217;s gate keeper allows the commands execute on SYMM<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">METAVOLUME<\/span><\/em><\/strong>: -&#160;&#160; The larger volumes created by concatenating or striping the smaller hyper volumes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The size of a Meta volume depends on the micro code.<\/li>\n<li>2 to 255 hyper volumes can be joined to a Meta volume.<\/li>\n<li>All hypers joined to a Meta volume should be of same size.<\/li>\n<li>They should follow same protection mechanism.<\/li>\n<li>Meta volume is identified by its Meta head i.e., the first volume of the Meta volume.<\/li>\n<li>Volumes are mapped to the host through the front end director ports.<\/li>\n<li>The ports have some flags either disabled or enabled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The following flags should be enabled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>C bit enabled&#160; for common serial number to volume<\/li>\n<li>SCSI persistent reservations enabled for cluster environment<\/li>\n<li> VCM enabled<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>To change the status of port flags offline the ports of directors, once <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Changed, enable the directors.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">LAB SESSION:-<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create six standard devices two way protected of size 450MB<\/li>\n<li>Create eight BCV devices of size 450MB<\/li>\n<li>Create a device unprotected of size five cylinders <\/li>\n<li>Map the devices <\/li>\n<li>Mask the devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NOTE:- <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For convenience, following device names are given through out the programme.<\/p>\n<p>i)&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;
